Introduction to the 1900s-1980s
The United States is a very diverse country. Thousands of people who came from different country built the country we have today. There are many different races of people in the U.S. such as white American, African American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Americans, Asians etc. Asian Americans have a large population in the America. Asian Americans immigration started from 1848. Large number of Asians came to settle in the U.S because of oppression, war threat or poverty in their hometown. The three largest groups of Asian Americans are the Chinese, Filipinos, and Vietnamese. During the 1900s to 1980s, the Chinese, Filipinos, and Vietnamese had many impact in the United States history. There was large number of Chinese immigrants coming in the U.S. in the 1850s to 1900s. The Chinese Exclusion Act was passed due to the increase of Chinese population in the competition of jobs. Americans also become racist in Chinese. Then, in 1920s, Chinese population decreased. However, because of Chinese men serving the U.S army in World War II, the Chinese Exclusion Act was repealed and the racism issue decreased. The Filipinos came in the early 1900s because of the control of Spain. In 1901, Filipinos served the in the U.S navy. However, they also suffer racial segregation until 1973. The Vietnamese has suffered segregation as well in their hometown and in the U.S. They came in as a large number of refugees in 1975 after the Vietnam War. These three large groups of immigrants came to settle in the U.S and brought culture into America with them. As the time passes, their customs were accepted in the American society. Now, they are part of the United States’ history.
