Filipinos Immigrants
The Start of the Immigrantion
The first wave of Filipinos who came to the U.S. was because the control of Spain. During the American colonial period, the Filipinos were U.S. Nationals and were not limited in immigration. Therefore, the second wave of immigrants came to the U.S. looking for jobs. However, During the Depression in 1930s, Filipinos were still targeted for jobs competition and race violence. Therefore, the second wave immigration ended under Philippine Act in 1934. It only allowed 50 people to immigrate per year. The third wave of immigration is after World War II. Filipinos who served for the war can become a citizen of the United States. Filipinos War brides can also became a citizen of the U.S. according to the War Brides Act and Fiancée Act. There were around 16,000 Filipinas who came to the U.S. after the year of World War II. The Luce-Celler Act in 1946 gave quota to Filipinos which allows 100 people immigrate per year. In 1965, the third wave of immigration stopped. And according to the study, 32,201 Filipinos immigrated to the U.S. Between 1953 to 1965.The fourth wave of immigration began in 1965. The Nationality Act in 1965 ended the quota system and allowed unlimited immigration yearly. Between 1970s and 1980s, Filipina wives reached five to eight thousand in immigration.
Filipinos Serving the Navy and Becoming Part of the United States
Filipinos also served the U.S navy for a long term. At the beginning of 1900s, the Filipinos have already immigrated to the United States. Filipinos began to serve the United State Navy in 1901.San Francisco was the place where the U.S. military trained for the war in the Philippines for the Spanish American War in 1898. General Emilio Aguinaldo had been fight for this war since 1896, and the U.S joined the Philippine side in 1899. During 1898 to 1902, soldiers trained in San Francisco's Presidio. The highest concentration of Philippines is in Daly City and was the largest population of Asian in Daly City. In the City Hall, there was a Filipino mayor. Before World War I, Filipinos were allowed to do ratings. However, after the law changed, they were only allowed to be officers' stewards and doing attendants. This ended in 1946 with the independent of the Philippines from the United States. This resumed in 1947 because of the Military Base Agreement between the United States and Republic of the Philippines. In 1973, Admiral Zumwalt removed the restriction in the Filipinos sailors and gave them any position that they qualified in. Then, 17,000 Filipinos served for the U.S. Navy.
